Exercise is good for us. Unless we have specific medical advice to the contrary, we can say with confidence that exercise is good for us. The trick is finding the right exercise for you.
Getting into the habit of regular exercise is the trick. This is different for different people.
Walking
Walking is a great exercise. Walking the dog. Walking to work. Walking at lunchtime. Walking up stairs rather than taking the lift. You can walk at a comfortable pace, or you can pick up the speed and walk so that you heart is pumping a bit faster.
Exercising in groups
Many people find it better to exercise in groups. Whatever the exercise some people find it better to do it in groups, because there is that gentle pressure to turn up. Whilst on your own you can always say, oh not today. But in groups there is a sort of group pressure to turn up. There are lots of possibilities including walking, jogging, swimming, cycling, yoga and many more.
The Gym
In the gym you have lots of choices of exercise. Some people find it really hard to keep to the routine of going to the gym, whilst others love the gym and go every day. You can go at your own pace and as often as you like.
Group sports
People who do group sports love them because exercise with others in a sport doesn’t really feel like exercise, it’s more like fun. Badminton, football, netball, baseball, rounders are all popular group sports.
Swimming
The great thing about swimming is that your body is supported whilst exercising. This means that straining things is less likely. And it’s nice to be supported too!
Yoga
Those who haven’t tried yoga might be forgiven for thinking that it is not really an exercise. Wrong! Try it and you will see that it really is exercise.
Starting to exercise
When we start to exercise we usually need to start gently. Give our bodies a chance to adjust. If you have a medical condition it’s always a good idea to ask your doctor for advice.
